Data isn't oil, so what is it? Metaphors shape how we understand, and change, the world. We need a better metaphor for data. Matt Locke. May 15, 2021. 17. Share this post. Data isn't oil, so what is it? howtomeasureghosts.substack.com. Copy link. Facebook. Email. Note. Other. 9.

The phrase "data is the new oil" was apparently coined in 2006 by Clive Humby, the British mathematician and architect of the Tesco Clubcard, a supermarket reward program. Since then, it has been repeated and amplified, first by ...
  6. The bits on the other hand, in data, are static. Without significant effort, data is not valuable. Data is the new soil as it has a lot more common with soil/land (which may contain an oil deposit) than with oil. Dangers of Oil Analogy. If one goes with this analogy, amassing data looks like an asset build.
  7. Nov 15, 2019It's clear that data really is the new oil and that the main impact on humanity isn't how tech giants are monetizing our attention units, but about how data can improve our lives. Sounds familiar ...

Replied to Data isn't oil, so what is it? by Matt Locke (How To Measure Ghosts). Perhaps then we'd understand how we can handle this data in a more responsible way. A metaphor that puts our personal experience at the forefront will help us find out where to draw lines in how our lives are stored and processed, and to understand that the lines will need to be different for different people.
